Skin Cancer Removal
Predominantly caused by overexposure to the sun’s UV rays, skin cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer in Australia. When detected early, its treatment is often highly successful; however, when left untreated, skin cancer can be deadly. Regular skin cancer screenings – in combination with protective clothing and the habitual application of sunscreen – can be a crucial part of preventing and detecting skin cancer in its earliest stages. At The Lotus Clinic, our plastic surgeon, Dr. Chandra Patel, offers extensive skin cancer screenings and provides a number of skin cancer removal procedures designed to extract harmful cells from your body while minimizing any potential scarring.
If you notice any irregularities or discolorations on your skin, or for questions regarding our skin cancer removal techniques, please contact The Lotus Clinic today.
Skin Cancer Types
Skin cancer can form in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. Common types of skin cancer are listed below.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma – Generally not lethal, basal cell carcinomas often appear on frequently exposed areas (face, neck, arms, hands, etc.) and do not typically spread past their point of origin. However, when left untreated they can cause severe damage to underlying skin tissues and become very harmful.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma – More aggressive than basal cells, squamous cell carcinomas can spread into the lymphatic system and be lethal if left untreated. This type of skin cancer often forms on the face, ears, and lips, and it generally appears in a raised and irregular shape.
- Malignant Melanoma – The most aggressive form of skin cancer, a malignant melanoma can spread rapidly throughout the body and can be extremely lethal when left untreated. This form of skin cancer can appear anywhere and often resembles a multi-colored or very dark mole with an asymmetrical shape.
- Melanoma In-Situ – Technically not a type of skin cancer, a melanoma in-situ refers to carcinogenic cells detected in their earliest stages. The successful treatment and complete removal of skin cancer cells can be greatly increased when skin cancer is caught at this stage.
Although some forms of skin cancer may be more aggressive than others, any irregularity on your skin should be assessed by a medical professional in order to determine the proper course of action.
Skin Cancer Screening
A yearly skin cancer screening can be a crucial part of maintaining your overall health. During a screening, Dr. Patel will thoroughly examine your skin to detect any irregularities or potentially harmful areas. The examination is relatively quick and there is no downtime following the screening. If an irregularity is detected, Dr. Patel will help you determine the proper course of action based on your needs.
